Quarterly Update from the President

At the halfway point of the year I thought it would be appropriate to bring you up to date on the work of your Board of Directors.  Perhaps the most appropriate place to start is with our signature event, the annual Canada Day Celebration at UOIT/Durham College. As those who attended can attest, this year’s event was the most successful we have ever organized.  I would like to congratulate the Canada Day Committee for a job well done. I would also like to thank the dozens of volunteers who braved the heat to contribute, working the fish pond or handing out cake or water. Clearly, without them this event would not be possible. At the first Jim Flaherty Canada Day Celebration five years ago we had about 800 people attend and that number has grown considerably. This year we served over 4000 hamburgers and hotdogs and who knows how many ice cream cones. In addition, we watched as about 50 new Canadians took their oath of citizenship, listened to the music of the Highland Creek Pipes and Drums and enjoyed the dance moves of several dance troupes.  As Jim Flaherty pointed out in his welcoming remarks, ours is the largest Canada Day Celebration of any MP in the Country.

While the Canada Day celebration is our largest event, it is by no means our only event.  Through the work of the Membership and Outreach Committees we participate in events like the Brooklin Spring Fair Parade, the Whitby Town Carnival and various charity events like the Big Bike Ride and the Terry Fox Run.  These are in addition to our more political events like policy sessions with guest speakers. These events usually result in lively debate among those in attendance.

I am also very proud of the work of our Communications Committee this year as they spearheaded the introduction of our new quarterly newsletter which I hope you will all read and share with friends and family.  Several Board members have also been actively involved in Committees of the National Council which only serves to enhance our reputation as a dynamic and leading EDA.

Like many organizations, we will enjoy some down time over the summer, but will be back in action at a number of events in the fall and winter.  Please consider joining us and becoming more involved in the work of the EDA and our efforts to support our exemplary MP, Jim Flaherty and our Conservative Government under the strong leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

Finally, I wish you and your families a safe and enjoyable summer.

Regards,

Gary Valcour
